manhole是指（地下管線或下水道供人出入檢修的）檢修孔，檢查井，也就是下水道出入孔。常設(shè)于城市的排水管道交匯處，方便工作人員檢查和疏通管道。

英文釋義：a covered opening in a road that a worker can enter in order toreach underground pipes, wires, or drains that need to beexamined or repaired.

e.g. The workers have examined all the manholes in the city. 工人們已經(jīng)檢查了城市里所有的下水道出入孔。

井蓋可以說成“a manhole cover”。

be in a hole

be in a hole指的是“陷入困境，處于窘境”的意思，英文釋義為：to be in a difficult or an embarrassing situation.

如果把量詞“a”修改為定冠詞“the”，“be in the hole”又是另外一個意思了，它與“in debt”同義，理解為“欠債，虧空”。
